Improve Your Vision And The Health Of Your Eyes


3 Simple Things You Can Do Now To Improve Your Vision And The Health Of Your Eyes

I have been wearing glasses for more than 20 years and I have become quite dependent on them... And quite frankly I am fed up of this. Can you relate?

I have therefore taken it upon myself to improve my eyesight and the general heath of my eyes. However, I only want to improve my vision through natural means since I can deal with the expense and risks related to eye surgery.

I have done quite a bit of research on these issues, and I would like to share with you what I plan to do based on my research.

1) Reduce The Effects of Computer Vision Syndrome

Have you ever heard about Computer Vision Syndrome? Computer Vision Syndrome is defined as the "group of eye and vision problems related to near work that are experienced during or related to computer use". There are various symptoms such as tired, sore and dry eyes, eye strain, headaches, slowness in changing the focus of your eyes and excessive tearing. I do a lot of computer work and have experienced some of these symptoms.

However, there are habits that you can develop in order to reduce the effects of Computer Vision Syndrome.

Create an ergonomic workstation

Based on my research, a viewing distance of 20-28 inches is most common. Also, the center of the computer screen should be 4-9 inches below your eyes, because your eyes work best with a slight downward gaze. Your computer screen and other work (and your phone, if that's part of your office) should be located straight in front of you so that you don't have to look sideways or twist your body or neck to see them.

Eliminate glare in your work area

Adjust blinds or curtains to minimize sunlight. Turn down overhead lights so that the brightness of the screen and the surrounding room are balanced. However, do not, however, work in the dark

Adjust your screen

Optimal contrast and visibility are attained with black characters on a white background. However, other combinations can be comfortable so long as the brightness contrast between the characters and the background is high. It is best to avoid dark backgrounds."

You can also adjust your brightness/contrast controls, and use a larger text size, as display legibility is an important factor in visual performance. For most, the size of the text should be three times the size of the smallest text you can read.

Take a break

It's easy to lose track of time at the computer. Always remember the 10-10-10 rule and at the very minimum take a break at least once an hour for about 10 minutes and blink frequently. The "10-10-10 rule" states that every time you are performing close vision work for over 10 consecutive minutes, look up and focus on anything that is at least 10 feet away, for at least 10 seconds.

2) Nutrition for Healthy Eyes

Proper nutrition is an important part of living a healthy lifestyle. However, have you ever wondered how your diet affects your eyesight?

I am sure that you've heard that carrots are good for your eyes. Ever wondered why? Carrots contain a carotenoid called beta-carotene. Your body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A, which is an anti-oxidant. Antioxidants such as vitamin A are essential to eye health. Vitamin A is known to:

  • Help your eyes adjust to light changes
  • Moisten the eyes, which can enhance visual acuity
  • Prevent the forming of cataracts
  • Help prevent blindness from AMD

Vitamin C and E also assist in the long term health of your eyes.

Studies have shown that Lutein, which is found in foods such as dark green leafy vegetables, eggs, corn and pumpkins, may reduce the risk of AMD as well as it may play a role in helping reduce the risk of cataract extraction.

Drink water more frequently. I am sure you've heard this before.

Increase intake of nutrients that promote healthy eyesight. There are eye vitamin supplements especially formulated for healthy eyesight.

3) Do Eye Exercises

There is a case for eye exercises. In my research, I have come across numerous references as to the benefits of doing eye exercises and there are several natural vision improvement programs available.
